El Maya guitars are among the most interesting Japanese instruments of the 1970s.

The brand became associated with Rokkoman from Kobe and is often linked to the Japanese factory Chushin Gakki, which later also built instruments for brands such as Charvel and Jackson. While the regular Maya line was primarily known for affordable models, El Maya represented the higher-end series, featuring not only copies of well-known American guitars but also striking original designs.

The El Maya Future Four EM1300 is undoubtedly one of the most striking models from that period. The design shows clear influences from early Alembic instruments, featuring a luxurious appearance, often a neck-through construction, and a distinctly futuristic character that differed significantly from the usual Fender- and Gibson-inspired models of the time.

This El Maya dates from 1970 and is in excellent condition. The guitar has accumulated some signs of wear and dings here and there, but is remarkably clean for a 56-year-old instrument. The frets have been replaced, however. The combination of solid construction, powerful electronics, and the sleek Japanese finish gives the EM1300 a voice of its own with plenty of definition, sustain, and clarity.

Because relatively few of these guitars were built and they rarely appear on the market, the Future Four has grown into a beloved cult model among collectors of special Japanese vintage guitars.
